Where art thou, fathers? So we call on the Father. Steve Martin, Love For His People ministry

Fathers. Where Are You?

“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6 “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.” Malachi 4:5-6, NASU

How wonderful it is to celebrate Father’s Day each year in the USA. And yet, where are the fathers? With each passing generation, the presence of a father in the home has gotten less and less in numbers. And we have certainly seen the results of having fatherless children.

Many mothers have done a great job in raising the ones the Lord brought forth life through them. They have strived to give their children the best they can, and it amazes me how they have done it so well. I bless the women who are mothers and stand strong for their children daily.

And yet, when I think of the fathers, my heart is heavy. We have not done so well.

Over the generations, it seems that men have continually lost that which they were meant to be. Out of  God the Father’s heart Himself, He created men to lead, guide, and nurture the children they themselves “initiated” through a single act. And yet, far too many have neglected their responsibility, their duty, their God-given purpose as a father – to actually father and raise their creation, together with their mother.

It is very easy to become a dad. It is very hard to become and continue to be a father.

I am not writing this on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022, to lambast the men who have kids. Most certainly, I too have not been the one I so desired to be when in my 20s and looking for a good woman to marry and have children together. (I always wanted to see what our kids would look like when they did come forth and grew up!)

On so many occasions in those early and ongoing years of learning to be a good dad, I was not always there to be the example, to be the leader, be the encourager that each one of my children needed. Even with the ministries I served others through, taking my weekly time when on so many occasions I should have been home with my wife and kids, raising them more properly.

But I am thankful that our good Lord forgives and restores what was lacking, or not having been there to lay the best life’s foundation I could have in their lives.

Our Father God is perfect. We are not. And so, we must call out to Him for His love and grace on a regular basis.

Previous generations that I have known didn’t have it all together either. Yes, our fathers and grandfathers worked hard, did what they knew to do, and provided for the daily basic shelter and food, and yet many missed the mark when the spiritual foundation so needed was not laid.

Again, how far we have missed the mark that our Father so desired men to attain.

But we cannot dwell on the past. We must become the men, the fathers, that we have been called to be. We must trust in the Lord that He will redeem the past, restore the strong foundations, and establish once again families with godly fathers in the homes. In all the nations of the world.

Our kids need us. They need to see the hand of God the Father through the fathers here on this earth.

Thank You, Lord, that You know what is needed, and You will give each father, who call on Your Name, the heart for their children, even from Your very heart. We need You. We need Your presence daily in our lives. We need it for the sake of our children and our grandchildren.

Our hope for today always comes from His Word.

“God the Father has his eye on each of you, and has determined by the work of the Spirit to keep you obedient through the sacrifice of Jesus. May everything good from God be yours!” 1 Peter 1:2, THE MESSAGE
