“You have established all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer and winter.” Psalm 74:17 NAS
During my high school senior year in 1973 in Waterloo, Iowa, the movie The Way We Were, starring Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand, hit the big screen. I do not recall much about it other than it being a romantic one, so I suppose during that year more love was in the air. Or being a young man, it surely seemed as such.
When I consider the way we were during that decade, I do recall life was more set in many ways – you believed after high school you would go to college or get a job; then get married; raise a family; be active in church life, etc. Boundaries were set in so many areas. What you did was either black or white. Simple. Follow the laws and all would be good.
We no longer have that these years. What the Lord had (and continues to have) set as boundaries, peoples of the nations have been doing all they can to cast off the restraints, eliminate the boundaries, and each do what is right in their own eyes. They have no vision for righteousness; therefore, they have become lawless.
“Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law.” Proverbs 29:18, NAS
Most often when people hear the word “law”, even in Christian circles, they cringe. They even think of it as a bad thing. “No one is going to tell me what to do” is far too often commonly heard, as some would think “law” will hold them back, keep them from being “free”, and put too many restraints upon them. Being “under the law” will keep them from being happy, as if that is to be the main goal in life.
Where does that come from?
The Lord gave us His Word to set us free, find fulfillment, understand His ways that are to be our ways, to give us the life sincerely and mercifully He knows is best.
The “law”, His commands, isn’t meant to hold us back, but to enable each and everyone to acknowledge the right to life each is to be given, from conception to burial, that He gives us. By following His written ways, the laws of life, we will truly be free, protected, and enabled to grow in family and within a godly nation.
We have seen what casting off the “law” has done, as the new “woke” (I do not understand that illogical concept at all) and other social concepts of living for oneself has replaced the former way of life – where we were taught to sacrifice ourselves for the good of the whole.
This message is not meant to be nostalgic, to just remember the good old days. This is meant to remind us that we must hold the line when it comes to following the crowd or letting each do his or her own thing as it seems right in their own eyes. The end does not justify the means. Truly the result will be based on the road we took to get where we are going.
In our spiritual, social, and natural lives, we each must stand for what the Bible says is good and pleasant, righteous, and truthful. I would imagine most of you reading this know that. I just want to encourage you to keep on doing what He says, and not bow to the current winds of change.
The way we were in acknowledging Him is still the right way. Let us hold fast to that end.
