“Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. He did right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David and did not turn aside to the right or to the left. For in the eighth year of his reign while he was still a youth, he began to seek the God of his father David; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherim, the carved images and the molten images.” 2 Chronicles 34:1-4, NASU
Realizing the importance of reading the entire Bible, what we call the Old and New Testaments, I had been including in my daily time reading the books of Chronicles, as the kings of Israel came and went.
After reading several chapters, my heart would rejoice when the words spoke of the king walking in the ways of the Lord, as recorded above of King Josiah. But it seemed more often than not that the next one in line, usually a son, “did not walk in the ways of his father.” When I read those verses, my heart sank.
“Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God.” 2 Chronicles 36:5-6, NASU
It’s a challenge to keep walking in the ways of the Lord, and even more so to pass on and teach the next generation, so they know Him, and walk in His ways.
Time after time the governing forces would rise up, each then making the choice as to whether to follow the Lord and His commands, or to go after the gods of the world and do evil in His sight. When the people turned from the living ways to the deadly ways, they brought on the resulting righteous judgment as foretold by the Lord.
All of us are very familiar now with the verse in 2 Chronicles 7:14 when the Lord calls His people back to Him. But what we miss understanding or even reading is the verses preceding it.
“Then the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.” 2 Chronicles 7:12-16, NKJV
Notice particularly the words, “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people…”
It clearly says that the LORD HIMSELF is the one bringing judgment AMONG HIS PEOPLE by withholding rain, sending pestilence (i.e. plagues, viruses). It isn’t the devil. It is God.
Because His people have turned to the wicked ways – the abortion, the sex trafficking, the pornography, the sports idols and Hollywood superstars, the lust for money and power – and ceased seeking Him.
A recent prime example as to how far our nation, the United States of America, was recently reported by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, on their website dated March 1, 2021 (Nadler’s dismissal of God in Congress)
“There were a lot of powerful arguments against the Equality Act, but Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) resorted to the ultimate authority: the Bible. During an intense debate on the House floor, the Florida representative said it was time for his colleagues to hear the truth about the transgender issue. But Democrats aren’t interested in the truth — or God. And far-Left radical Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) didn’t mind saying so.
“‘A woman must not wear men’s clothing nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this,'” Steube read from Deuteronomy 22:5. But let’s be clear, he said. “It’s not clothing or personal style that offends God, but rather the use of one’s appearance to act out or take on a sexual identity different from the one biologically assigned by God at birth.” What’s happening when men, women, and children do that, Steube said, is that “they’re making a statement that God didn’t know what He was doing when he created them.” And if Congress supports that — by passing extreme transgender bills like the Equality Act — then this country is “go[ing] directly against what is laid out in scripture.”
Democrats, irate that the Florida congressman dared to quote the word of God on the House floor, unleashed on Steube. Everyone from Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) to Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), shamed him for being transphobic and intolerant. But it was Congressman Nadler’s response that was the most shocking and revealing. “Mr. Steube,” he said pointedly, “what any religious tradition describes as God’s will is no concern of this Congress.” In other words, take your God and your Bible and leave them out this.
Almost immediately, a picture of Nadler started circulating on social media with the line, “God has no authority in the House of Representatives” at the top. It was a paraphrase of Nadler’s comment but a legitimate expression of his belief and the Left’s, which is that there’s no room for God in public policy.”
The Lord has said that out of our mouths come what is in our hearts. Point taken, and truly revealed above, through Congressman Nadler. How far has our country fallen?
Christians, Jews, god-fearing men and women need to speak up, stand up, not give in, not back down to the ungodly challenges being brought forth through our political and even religious leaders. If it isn’t biblical, we can expect the Lord actions, and His righteous judgments to follow.
“After they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, “Brethren, listen to me. “Simeon has related how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name. “With this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written,
‘AFTER THESE THINGS I will return, AND I WILL REBUILD THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID WHICH HAS FALLEN, AND I WILL REBUILD ITS RUINS, AND I WILL RESTORE IT, SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK THE LORD, AND ALL THE GENTILES WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME,’ SAYS THE LORD, WHO MAKES THESE THINGS KNOWN FROM LONG AGO.” Acts 15:13-18, NASU
May we seek the Lord in our time.
