“Going Fishing?” – Time To Act by Steve Martin
“Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” John 21:3, NKJV
Experience any setbacks in your life recently?
After having just experienced the crucifixion of Jesus (Yeshua) in the last hours, Peter had given up hope. He figured all the promises spoken by the Lord were gone, never to happen as He said they would. The prophets were also wrong. It was over.
Rather than stand on faith, which to me would have been easier for one as Peter, who had walked with the Lord for the last three years, side by side, compared to those who had not, he chose to go back to things as they used to be. He decided to go back to fishing.
How easy it can be to give up, to give in, to tell oneself that the enemy of our soul has won, the challenges are too hard, and we might as well just give up, quit, and go back to the “road of comfort and ease” and forget about pressing on, being steadfast on the path of faith and courage.
Peter had basically called it quits. The one who had the big mouth, the “main man”, the one who just days before had said that he would stand with Jesus no matter what, had now decided that it was over, that he would go back to the life he had before the big adventure started three years earlier. He was going back to that which all others would consider ok, and would think “Why not?”
After all, Jesus was dead. Gone. The dream was over.
We have setbacks in our lives. We experience disappointments, times of discouragement, days or weeks of having no motivation to do anything other than taking the easy road of giving up and letting it all go.
But we must not. We cannot. For the sake of our Lord – the One Who has redeemed us, cleansed us, and has never forsaken us – we can’t just go back to doing that which seems the easiest way to go.
For the sake of our families, our cities, our countries, we must continue to be greater and brighter lights in the world even as the darkness seems to overwhelm all else and looks like it is winning the battle and thus the war.
In The Message version of John 21, it goes on to say, “The rest of them replied, “We’re going with you.” They went out and got in the boat. They caught nothing that night. When the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach, but they didn’t recognize him.” John 21-3-4, THE MESSAGE
The former way they had known gave them no comfort nor better results. They caught nothing, for the Lord had a better plan for them. They were not meant to go back to their former ways, the former life, the way that had no lasting purpose. The Lord intended them to go on, with Him, in the promises that He had spoken, and already had fulfilled. They were called and chosen to continue with Him. They just needed to see it a bit more.
Our Lord wanted to show them that He was still the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He thus once again provided them with hope, courage, and vision. He gave them bread. He gave them fish. He showed them that it was not over, because He was no longer dead, but alive.
“Jesus then took the bread and gave it to them. He did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus had shown himself alive to the disciples since being raised from the dead.” John 21:13-14, THE MESSAGE
When matters look as if all is done, it is over, and the only thing to do is to go back to doing what we had been doing before we met Jesus, we must remember that He has promised to be with us and carry us through. He is and will remain our provider, giving us that which is needed to keep walking with Him, in belief and encouragement.
The battles will continue, but we can be strengthened in our resolve to keep fighting, to keep giving hope to others; to not quit.
May the good Lord continue to be your hope and vision for today and tomorrow.
