“Show Your Faith” – Time To Act by Steve Martin

“But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:18, NASB

When one reads that verse above, many are taught that it is speaking of salvation, and wrongly interpret it to mean that we are saved by our works. Not so.

What it is saying is that our faith we have, if we truly have faith, is expressed by and through our actions. Are we living as Christians? Then people will know, and see our faith, by the actions we take. These actions are not “saving us”, for only the sacrificed death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus on the cross can do that, but they are showing that what we have is real, and not just words we speak.

So too our faith is expressed when, as citizens of the country we abide in allows us to vote for the government that we stand with to govern over us, in the natural realm, we do so. Those who take this privilege and also obligation seriously are acting upon that which our Lord has given to us – to practice our faith by helping to place into office godly men and women who will carry out His will as they govern over us.

It really amazes me when Christian friends choose not to vote or participate in any election, basically saying that the Church is not to be involved with the local, state, and national governments. Where does it say that in the Bible?

Did not the prophets of old speak to, confront as needed, and declare the Word of the Lord to the governors and the kings within the nation they lived? Did they not hear the Word of the Lord, and in obedience, do that which they had been commanded to? Most of the times it was to speak of needed repentance. Other times it was a word of action in order to save the nation from its enemies.

The Lord’s prophets spoke to the kings of Israel, declaring His Word to them. Whether they listened or not was up to them, and they would reap the results accordingly. Here is one example in 2 Kings 21:10-15 as written,

10 Now the Lord spoke through His servants the prophets, saying, 11 “Since Manasseh king of Judah has committed these abominations, having done more evil than all that the Amorites did who were before him, and has also misled Judah into sin with his idols, 12 therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, I am bringing such a disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that whoever hears about it, both of his ears will ring. 13 I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem clean just as one wipes a bowl, wiping it and turning it upside down.

14 And I will abandon the remnant of My inheritance and hand them over to their enemies, and they will become as plunder and spoils to all their enemies, 15 because they have done evil in My sight, and have been provoking Me to anger since the day their fathers came from Egypt, even to this day.’”

We too can speak with our mouth, and also speak by letting our voice be heard through the voting booth. To sit back and say it is not our place to be involved in our government elections is relegating that choice to the ungodly. To say that the Lord does not care about the politics and actions of our government is to deny a great portion of Scripture, where He Himself absolutely demonstrates His concern by the actions He always took by being involved with the governments of the nations. Not only with Israel, but also with the Egyptians, Persians, Medes, Greeks, and Romans.

Throughout American history, our elected officials, including our presidents, were moved by the hand of God upon them, and the citizens in each state had the duty and the responsibility to be a part of the ruling process. Christian pastors through our history took part, and encouraged their flock, to make their voices heard in their communities. It was just part of their Christian life. It was an expression of their daily faith.

If we do not participate in our elections, or carelessly cast a vote for ones who are opposed to God’s ordinances, then we too will face His judgement on our land, as we allow the ungodly to rule unhindered or unopposed.

Be involved. Demonstrate your faith by showing it through your vote, responsibly.

And for those who already do or have done, good for you! May the Lord show Himself strong on our behalf.
