“Old Age? Retire? Really?” – Time To Act by Steve Martin
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar in the L’vanon. Planted in the house of Adonai, they will flourish in the courtyards of our God. Even in old age they will be vigorous, still full of sap, still bearing fruit, proclaiming that Adonai is upright, my Rock, in whom there is no wrong.” Psalm 92:13-16, Complete Jewish Bible
Remember when you were 20, 30, or even 40, and you saw all the “retirees” and thought, “Man. Old age. Time to just sit around and watch TV. Or play daily golf. Or hang out with some similar friends of like-mindedness playing card games.
“I won’t be doing that!” was my thought. Especially after living among those ones in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area for 7 years. I wanted no part of the grumbling, bitterness, hatred of young children, and waste of life they seemed to then be experiencing. Some by choice.
Sorry if that sounds harsh, but that was not going to be me as too many of them were and continue to be. No, for us, it is time to act. It is not the time to go off somewhere to wither and die, in some by-gone or meaningless life.
When I “retired” at the ripe old age of 63 from my Accountant’s job working uptown in Charlotte, North Carolina, and started collecting back some of my 47 years of paying into the Social Security American system, it was to quit the NASCAR road race commuting scene on I77, the daily stress of working the 9-5 job (or in my case the 6 am – 3:30 pm time before the others got to their desks at 9:30 am, or my boss at 10:00 am) and do something else.
I felt the time had come to concentrate more on the ministry the Lord had given my good wife and I in 2010, Love For His People, Inc. And now I know my Good Lord knew the same thing, for He created this vessel for His full purposes and plans, not mine.
Little did I know, and you might be saying the same thing right about now, what the Lord really had in mind for me to do after that demarcation time.
I like the verse which I have used before in one of these Time To Act messages, as written in Ephesians 3:20 by the Apostle Paul, who knew what it meant to keep on keeping on.
“God can do anything, you know — far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” THE MESSAGE
I’ll repeat the Scripture I selected at the beginning of this message above, in another Bible version from Psalm 92:13-15, making it more personal by using the word “we” rather than “they”.
“Planted in the house of the Lord, we will flourish in the courts of our God. We will still yield fruit in old age; We shall be full of sap and very green, to declare that the Lord is upright; He is our rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” NASU
Amen! We will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit and doing good works in this time period that comes after the decades of responsible fulfillment of that which the Lord had us do in our previous season. For it was all in preparation for the time He has now given us, as I see it.
I draw encouragement from the men and women who have gone before us, who kept on, pressing on, to fulfill the call on their life, to see their God, and ours, do ALL that they had been created to do. Those of the Derek Prince, Corrie Ten Boom, Pat Robertson, Morris Cerullo, Billy Graham, Moses, Joshua, Abraham, Sarah type.
These years yet to come, if the Lord “tarries” as the Pentecostals like to say, are going to be adventurous, challenging, full of daring and “full of faith” faith. They will be years given to you and me to take the Gospel of the Kingdom, the truth of the Almighty King, the conquering ways that the Lord of lords has taught us, to bring life, not death, to the nations whom we know so desperately need Him now.
No, I am not going to spend my time “entertaining myself” and let these coming years just slide by, as if fading into some meaningful occupation of the comfy reclining chair or on the BBQ flavored potato chip couch.
Along with you valiant ones too, we are going to go forward in Almighty faith, glorious truth, and accomplish more for the King than what we could have ever dreamed or imagined we would we doing in this “old age” He has given us. (And by the way, these gray hairs didn’t come about by coloring them with Grecian formula.)
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” Ecclesiastes 9:10, NKJV
These years ahead of us will certainly be more than you and me could have ever thought or envisioned.
Come on! Walk with me and serve the Lord Jesus Christ, Yeshua HaMashiach, with all your strength, with all your soul, and with all your might, until He comes again!
Ahava and shalom,
