“More Than You Think or Imagine” – Time To Act by Steve Martin

“God can do anything, you know — far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3:20-21 THE MESSAGE

On and on and on and on. I believe there is a song with those lyrics, or at least my memory banks think so.

Is this not how we think at times, that life just goes on and on and on and on? Same thing. Repeated over and over and over again. So much to the point that we can forget our purpose, our destiny, our reason to keep doing what we have been doing. The seasons come and go, a monotonous repetition of our soul.

We can easily forget that our Lord promises that if we remain steadfast in our faith, we will see His glory and power outworked in our life. It is the biblical hope we have, an anchor of the soul.

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”  Hebrews 6:19-20, NKJV

But like me, you may at times look back over periods of your life and for the life of me, can’t fully see what He is doing, or has done. For us, my good wife Laurie and I, we had 7 years specifically when we lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from 1987-1994. We both at times since then have called it the “7 years in hell”. It was not a glorious season of our souls. For us, it was not a joyous time at all, with very little anticipation of anything beyond that time.

Those were difficult years of trying to raise four young kids surrounded by those who had moved south to either escape the cold in their “retired, full of bitterness and regretful memories” last years, while coming to die, or the ones who were the seasonal spring break sun seekers, taking up beach space while getting drunk. It just was depending upon your age.

That at least was how we saw it with our natural eyes at least.

At the same time, the weekly long hours I was putting in to administrate a worldwide ministry, where the founding healing evangelist of the work traveled 250 days out of the year, with only his minister wife, an assistant and myself to hold the fort at home, added to the toll also. And over that 7 years in that land, plus an additional 7 more that I served with them here in North Carolina, it almost completely wore me out. Not only was I either delivering or picking them up from the airport a total of 400 times during those 14 years (that is no exaggeration. I am an accountant by trade), but we then added a new church congregation in Charlotte, North Carolina, building and then meeting in “The Barn”, to consume more of my time which I felt I didn’t have.

“The Barn” – Charlotte, NC style. 1995

After more than a decade of service I left in exhaustion and disappointment, believing it may have been a waste of time. I could not, would not see the full picture as the Lord did and still does seated in heavenly places.

Adding another 10 years with two other worldwide ministries, for a total of 24 years serving in the vineyards of others, had brought me to the point of crying out to the Lord for “my own vineyard.”

You may have a similar story. You may have wondered, or even now wonder, why the process, the long periods of time, the unfulfilled promises that we seemingly cannot see, as we still far too often keep looking only with our natural eyes.

But He sees, He knows. And He Who is Faithful and True never breaks His promise – that if we remain steadfast, keeping our hand to the plow, we will see the fruit of all our labor.

“We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;” Colossians 1:3-7, NASU

As we keep going on, the time will come when the years of sowing will bring the promised years of reaping. That which we have been created to do will fully come about. It is a promise we can hold onto because again, the One Who does the promising is also the One Who always keeps His promises.

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21, NASU

Sometimes He will bring you full circle to achieve the sight of the finish line before His work is done in you. Sometimes He may return you to the place you swore you’d never return to, but it becomes the place He has prepared for you to carry out His eternal plans, and His eternal purposes, for the sake of His eternal people, chosen before the creation of the earth.

Remember Moses? Egypt to the desert and then back to Egypt? He was taken full circle to be a part of walking out God’s plan for His people.

I can now say I rejoice in these full 65 years of preparation, for that which is now about to come will be the culmination of that which He has wonderfully taken the time to bring forth.

Now is the time to act, to step out and fulfill the rest of the call He has created and commissioned for you to do.

“Cross the river” as He spoke to me just last week. The promised land does await you on the other side.

It is time for you and me to act on that which you have been taught and have come through over these many years or decades. Now is now more than ever where you are needed to fulfill your call and purpose, in this very hour.

And guess what, when you do go forward in faith, I believe it will be more than you think or could have imagined.
