“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:23-25, NASU
Wow! I wonder what the writer of Hebrews was thinking when he wrote those Scriptures back in the first century. Imagine. “Not forsaking our own assembling together.”
He must not have realized, or the Holy Spirit failed to inspire him on this particular point, that the Covid-19 pandemic was coming in these last days. Or he forgot to include this in his inspired writing, “Unless your government shuts down all churches, synagogues, and houses of worship due to any reason they seem fit. Including your personal safety.”
Of course, every government, elected or unelected, is in power to serve the best interests and good of their people within their countries respected boundaries. Yes?
Tell that to the Chinese believers. They would certainly understand the need to obey every law their government passes. It is all about their safety too, no less you might tell them.
Or re-write the history books so that the ones in our educational system today know that the “pre-Holocaust” days, led by the duly elected German Chancellor, “Christian” Hitler, was shutting down gatherings for the protection of all citizens, unless you were of a certain race and color.
The former Soviet Union. Past and present-day Southeast Asian countries. And let us not leave out the South and Central American dictatorship-led countries. i.e. Venezuela. All of these governments passed laws for the protection of their people. Of course they did.
All had some excuse they enforced, as being the duly elected ones, to keep believers from gathering. And we know, being the law-abiding citizens of the USA, that our all-knowing leadership keeps churches and synagogues shut down for the sake of all.
Paul, or whomever the Hebrews Scripture writer was, wrote additionally in regards to not forsaking the assembling with one another, then even said, “as you see the day drawing near.”
Could it be that in “the last days” these governments and others in power – school boards, sports arenas, venue owners included – would tell us not to meet? Do they hold more power than God?
It seems that far too many pastors, bishops, priests, those with the spiritual titles, are content to let the “powers that be” control where we go, what we do, when we can do it (if at all). That is not what my Bible says.
The original “social distancers” lived in the first century within the assemblies that had been gathering, but some within the groups then stopped getting together.
But I suppose if they had live-streaming back then they could have said they were still apart of the believing ones? Today, how many Christians have now already stopped watching even their own church’s live streaming now? Over 33% or more I have read.
I hope you are not one to do the same in our day. But then again, in “the last days”, is this another sign of the days we are living in?
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” 2 Timothy 3:1-6, NKJV (We do know Paul wrote that Scripture.)
It is time to act. Not sit back and become slack. Pun intended.
And may I suggest this? If your church is not meeting together, find one that is. I would think that is where the Lord and His Spirit are also, in their midst, as He promised He would “when they were gathered together”. (Acts 2)
As for me and my house, we have never stopped meeting and assembling. We serve the Living God of Israel and obey Him. In faith. Not fear.
