“Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.” Mark 1:18, NASU
First, he would get you laughing with crazy jokes, funny stories, and common experiences we all have and laugh about later. Then, he would “hit you in the mouth” with a word of truth. And you remember it the rest of your life.
Such were the moments on several occasions when I sat in Christian conferences and heard the Bible teacher Bob Mumford speak, back in the days of my early walk with the Lord. Those foundational years were very important in my discipleship training and growing in the ways of the One Who knows what I needed to know, for the decades ahead.
Bob Mumford was that type of teacher/speaker who would get you laughing at something so obvious to all of us, and yet so common, that we would react with. “Yes, that’s me” type of relating. And then he would speak forth a word from the Lord, of truth, that would spiritually “hit you in the mouth”, leaving you wondering where that came from, and later realizing that it was the Lord waking you up, making you pay attention to His truth.
Ever get that during a message? Sure you have. It is the Holy Spirit enlightening your mind and spirit to the ways and means of the Lord. A “light bulb goes off in your head” moment. And you remember it the rest of your life.
We need that. We need some “jolts from heaven”, from the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh), to wake us up, to get us thinking something other than just what our normal senses would experience. We need those times when He sends a word or message to get us out of our sleep, our slumber, the sluggishness we walk in at times. We need the Holy Spirit daily. Direction, comfort, understanding, enlightenment. The list goes on.
It has always amazed me how many times in the Gospel of Mark, in the New American Standard version which I grew up on in the 1970s, where he uses the word “immediately.” No less than 42 times. I have noticed also that other versions use that word in English many times over, revealing the acts of the Lord and/or people’s responses to His word spoken to them.
Ever notice how the early discipled responded when Yeshua (Jesus) called them?
“Yeshua said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you into fishers for men!” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on a little farther, he saw Ya‘akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan, his brother, in their boat, repairing their nets. Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zavdai in the boat with the hired men and went after Yeshua.” Mark 1:17-20, Complete Jewish Bible
How many times has the Lord spoken to you personally and you immediately responded with a “Yes”? Most often I am afraid we react with a “No” as our first, immediate respond. (Another message Bob Mumford shared frequently. Until we got it!)
Is that how it is to be? The Creator of the Universe, Who knows our beginning to the end, gives us a word to hear and obey, and our first reaction is “No.” Far too many times. You and I both know it.
I personally am thankful that I never experienced what others my age did – the young men and women who were called by the Lord, got all excited, went off to seminary or college, and lost their faith in “higher learning and understanding.”
By the grace of God, I also never want to be like the young man whom Yeshua spoke about in the following Scriptures, who heard a direct word from the Lord and walked away. Found in Matthew 19:16-22.
“Another day, a man stopped Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” Jesus said, “Why do you question me about what’s good? God is the One who is good. If you want to enter the life of God, just do what he tells you.”
The man asked, “What in particular?” Jesus said, “Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie, 19 honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as you do yourself.”
The young man said, “I’ve done all that. What’s left?” “If you want to give it all you’ve got,” Jesus replied, “go sell your possessions; give everything to the poor. All your wealth will then be in heaven. Then come follow me.”
That was the last thing the young man expected to hear. And so, crestfallen, he walked away. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and he couldn’t bear to let go.” THE MESSAGE
How many times have we heard the Lord speak a word to us, even if quietly as He normally does, and just walk away? We overthink the “what may be”. We try to analyze what “may happen” if we obey? We wonder what others will think, if we actually do something that to them may look “out of the ordinary” and put us in their “crazy person” category.
Is that what you want and are satisfied with? To live an ordinary life and not hear and obey the Lord when He wants to give you a great one?
Our choice. It is always going to be our choice. And a daily choice at that.
We need some more jolts from heaven. We need some more wake-up calls. We need God to speak to us!
Guess what? To millions around the world in these last 3-4 months – He did! Were you one who listened and now will obey what He told you to do?
Send us more jolts from heaven, Lord Yeshua, until we actually get it. Help us to daily hear and obey, Holy Spirit, Ruach HaKodesh.
Now think on this.
