“Though None Go With Me” – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

June 9, 2020 Love for His People ministry in Charlotte, North Carolina USA

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15, NKJV

Simple words were spoken at that time when the man, his wife, and two sons were confronted with death. It came from a heart that had already been prepared and determined ahead of time – to follow Jesus. No turning back. No turning back.

Thus, the story behind the story that later became part of the song lyrics, “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus”. Read part of that now.

“About 150 years ago, there was a great revival in Wales, England.  As a result of this, many missionaries came from England to northeast India to spread the Gospel.  The region was known as Assam and comprised hundreds of tribes.  The tribal communities were quite primitive and aggressive.  The tribesmen were also called head-hunters because of a social custom which required the male members of the community to collect as many heads as possible.  A man’s strength and ability to protect his wife was assessed by the number of heads he had collected.  Therefore, a youth of marriageable age would try and collect as many heads as possible and hang them on the walls of his house.  The more heads a man had, the more eligible he was considered.

Into this hostile and aggressive community, came a group of Welsh missionaries spreading the message of love, peace, and hope of Jesus Christ.  Naturally, they were not welcomed.  One Welsh missionary finally succeeded in converting a man, his wife, and two children.  This man’s faith proved contagious and many villagers began to accept Christianity.  Angry, the village chief summoned all the villagers.  He then called the family who had first converted to renounce their faith in public or face execution.  Moved by the Holy Spirit, the man sung his reply, “I have decided to follow Jesus.  No turning back.”

Enraged at the refusal of the man, the chief ordered his archers to arrow down the two children.  As both boys lay twitching on the floor, the chief asked, “Will you deny your faith?  You have lost both your children.  You will lose your wife too.”

But the man replied, again singing, “Though none go with me, still I will follow.  No turning back.”

The Indian man had already made up his mind, determined in his heart that no matter what, He was going to follow Jesus. When he had given his life to the Lord, receiving the gift of salvation, it wasn’t just a “I feel good” moment. It was an eternal decision. From the beginning his life was going to be lived for the Lord, even as he knew the Lord Jesus had lived His life for him, died and rose from the dead proving He was the Messiah, the Savior of the world, and for all who would repent and follow Jesus, Yeshua.

They have chosen to follow Jesus.

Eternal salvation was worth so much more than the opportunity to save his life by denying the Lord and living another day.

How about you? What has been your decision? Follow Jesus as long as it doesn’t rock your boat, take you off the couch, have you do something that just might bring a change you really don’t want to change, or lead you down a journey you just as soon not go?

If this is so, then you REALLY haven’t yet decided to follow Jesus. Sure, you go to your weekly church meeting for an hour, or two, to mouth a few words now and then during the week about your Christianity or beliefs, but have you really decided to follow Jesus?

When the “rubber meets the road”, when faced with the choice to go one way instead of the easy way, when asked by His Holy Spirit to obey and say, “Yes!” to a command He gives, what will your decision be? Only if it is convenient? Only if it will feel good? Only if you can see the end results before you take the next step in faith?

These are questions you need to ask yourself now, and decide in your heart, and in your head, that yes, you will follow Jesus. No turning back. No turning back.

Can you sing this song, and mean it? Or is it just a nice, religious song that you may have sung when you were little, or your parents sang, and you just listened?

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.

2. Tho’ none go with me, I still will follow,
Tho’ none go with me I still will follow,
Tho’ none go with me, I still will follow;
No turning back, no turning back.

3. My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
My cross I’ll carry till I see Jesus,
My cross I’ll carry till I see Jesus;
No turning back, No turning back.

4. The world behind me, the cross before me,
The world behind me, the cross before me;
The world behind me, the cross before me;
No turning back, no turning back.

So where are you at? Still following Jesus? Still saying, and believing, “No turning back?” Still determined to the commitment you once declared, “though none go with me”?

As for me, and trusting also for my house, this is where I will stand. Come hell or high water.

Now think on this.
