“Abide in Me” – Now Think On This by Steve Martin

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-6, NKJV

I have no fear in dying. In fact, I look forward to the day when my mission here on earth is completed, I have done what the Lord has given me to do, and the time comes when He calls me home. I hope you can say the same.

Early on in my Christian walk He taught me to abide in Him, to call upon His Name, to seek Him in all things. It has been a journey, but to trust in His ways, plans, and purposes brings the peace we all have sought.

David drew near to the Lord often, as he too faced the ongoing pursuit by his enemies and the fears that came with life in general. But as he faced all these, his confidence grew in the One who watched over his soul, Who proved Himself faithful to guide and protect.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation;

Whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the defense of my life;

 Whom shall I dread?

When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh,

My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.

Though a host encamp against me,

My heart will not fear;

Though war arise against me,

In spite of this I shall be confident.

One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:

That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

To behold the beauty of the Lord

And to meditate in His temple.” Psalm 27:1-4, NASU

It amazes me how people try to live apart from knowing the Lord and abiding in Him. Observing their life results, as they seek all but Him, further implants into my heart how faithful He is, how loving He is, how merciful He is. And even though He gives each the opportunity to call upon His Name, to choose Him or not, the choices made reveals the eternal life each will later live. With Him or apart from Him.

It also amazes me how people still chose to deny the existence of God even in the midst of chaos around them, as if we are just here on this planet with no further purpose than to live for all we can get, and then die 60-80 years later. How sad. How very sad that is.

Apart from the Lord, we can do nothing. As Jesus Himself said in John 15:6, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” Or to put it another way, anything we do apart from Him will amount to nothing.

What have you done? Has it been in and for the Lord’s purposes and plans? Or will the life already lived end up accounting for nothing, if it was to end today? The God of the Universe is calling to us, to choose His ways.

We each have been given the opportunity to abide in Christ, the Messiah, the Giver of life. With the time He has each given us, what will be our account when we stand in front of Him on that day?

“I saw a Great White Throne and the One Enthroned. Nothing could stand before or against the Presence, nothing in Heaven, nothing on earth. And then I saw all the dead, great and small, standing there — before the Throne! And books were opened. Then another book was opened: the Book of Life. The dead were judged by what was written in the books, by the way they had lived.

Sea released its dead, Death and Hell turned in their dead. Each man and woman was judged by the way he or she had lived. Then Death and Hell were hurled into Lake Fire. This is the second death — Lake Fire. Anyone whose name was not found inscribed in the Book of Life was hurled into Lake Fire.” Revelation 20:11-15, THE MESSAGE

Assurance of His presence in our life, His leading and directing our steps comes by abiding in Him, by taking the time He gives each of us, daily, to seek His face, find His will, and walk in His ways. Each has been given 24 hours each day. What we choose to do with it will determine our destiny.

Now is the time to walk with the Lord, abide in Him, and know His ways. The life He gives is the one we have always sought for. But it is up to us to choose wisely and daily.

I encourage you to do so. Peace, hope, and true love will then be yours. We will have fulfilment in our hearts and the assurance of His eternal reward when that day comes, and the next one begins.

Now think on this.
