THE FUTURE OF JERUSALEM (ZECHARIAH 8:1-23)
A. THE LORD WOULD RETURN (Zechariah 8:1-13 )
This is what the Lord says, “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem.” Zechariah 8:1. Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain. He spoke again to Zechariah, the sovereign God has lots of information for us, unlike those dead gods who have mouths but can not speak. Again signifies the earlier performance of similar action.
His people must be attentive to Him in other to enjoy an earlier relationship with HIM (Psa 85:8 )
God is very jealous for Zion, the Holy City of God. First so-called when David took it from the Jebusites, Zion was adopted by God as His own because of His delight in David and as a way to further establish David’s throne. Hence His jealousy.
God emphasized His unflinching love for Zion. It must have been a very difficult decision for God to allow her to be reduced to a desolate place, but now that the people had repented He would jealously guide and guard them. God decided to return to and dwell in Jerusalem (Zion), to avoid any further crises, abandonment and or mayhem and to establish holiness and truth there.
Are you expecting His return? God’s people must be encouraged and be ready to welcome him in their midst.
B. THE BLESSING OF HIS RETURN (Zechariah 8:4-23 )
“So now I have determined to do well again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid.”
When the Lord visits His people, the experience is always glorious. Once again mean that they would regain their long-lost sweet experiences in, and with the Lord. The desolation had reduced their life span, but God would replace that with long life, peace, and prosperity, a type of the ultimate experience in God’s new heaven and earth.
The small group of the exiles who had returned to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple could hardly believe that the Lord would return after all that happened, coupled with discouragement from hostile neighbors. But God can not be stopped. Thus, the people must resiliently work towards the completion of the Temple.
God’s covenant relationship would be renewed, with His presence filling everywhere. His promise of forgiveness and restoration extends to His people everywhere.
God is jealous of His covenant people, So, their enemies must repent, for enmity with God’s people is enmity with God.
Brothers and Sisters, the thought of the Lord’s return should motivate us to do more for Him. May our good God of Israel bless you all in Jesus Name.
