“Keep persisting in prayer, staying alert in it and being thankful.” Colossians 4:2, Complete Jewish Bible

What a joy it was to attend the young couple’s wedding in Hyderabad, India in February 2020, and then see on their wedding program Don Moen’s song, “Thank You, Lord”. Here among the Hindus and Moslems, where Hindi and Telugu are two of the primary languages, you see this English worship song included in their wedding ceremony. A great surprise indeed.

This song, one of my favorites, is being sung around the world yet today. To see the nations singing this song from a great worship leader reminds us of what it is to give thanks to the great King and Lord, Jesus Christ, the Messiah of the nations.

It can be a continual reminder that we need to not fear, but always give thanks, with a thankful heart.

Along with me, you too can look around us and see trouble brewing. The nations are in an uproar and as fear grows, with plagues, destruction and viruses taking lives and expanding around the globe, seeking more to overcome, people panic. They hopefully will realize they need more than what they have had and know only in their natural lives.

So, what do we do, as believers? We give thanks for the Lord’s protection. Psalm 91 is for us, and all who will call upon His Name, as He covers us with His wings.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

You will not be afraid of the terror by night, or of the arrow that flies by day; o the pestilence that stalks in darkness, or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. For you have made the Lord, my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place. No evil will befall you, nor will any plague come near your tent.

For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, that you do not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and cobra, the young lion and the serpent you will trample down.

“Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. “With a long life I will satisfy him and let him see My salvation.” Psalm 91, NASU

We also see the peoples of the nations in political upheavals, revolting at injustice, government suppression, evil endeavors on the part of the oppressors. So, what do we do? We give thanks that the Lord of all knows all, and we know for sure that His day is coming.

Some of your children and grandchildren have yet to grasp hold of the faith that has become so vital in your life, that has kept you seeking the Lord through it all, as Andrae Crouch sang it loud and clear during the 1970s and 1980s. Our hope will become theirs too. Our God has promised it.

Andrae Crouch, Billy Graham Crusdae, 1975

“I’ve had many tears and sorrows,
I’ve had questions for tomorrow,
there’s been times I didn’t know right from wrong.
But in every situation,
God gave me blessed consolation,
that my trials come to only make me strong.

Through it all,
through it all,
I’ve learned to trust in Jesus,
I’ve learned to trust in God.

Through it all,
through it all,
I’ve learned to depend upon His Word.

I’ve been to lots of places,
I’ve seen a lot of faces,
there’s been times I felt so all alone.
But in my lonely hours,
yes, those precious lonely hours,
Jesus lets me know that I was His own

Through it all,
through it all,
I’ve learned to trust in Jesus,
I’ve learned to trust in God.

Through it all,
through it all,
I’ve learned to depend upon His Word.

I thank God for the mountains,
and I thank Him for the valleys,
I thank Him for the storms He brought me through.
For if I’d never had a problem,
I wouldn’t know God could solve them,
I’d never know what faith in God could do.”

We always have the choice to give thanks, to acknowledge that our times are continually in His hands. One of my favorite Scripture verses is included in the following passage, which says, “My times are in Your hands”, as included in Psalm 31.

“But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord, I say, ” You are my God.” My times are in Your hand; Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me. Make Your face to shine upon Your servant; Save me in Your lovingkindness. Let me not be put to shame, O Lord, for I call upon You; Let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol. Let the lying lips be mute, which speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.

How great is Your goodness which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the Lord, for He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city.” NASU

Giving thanks is up to us. We can choice to look up, see our Lord’s face, and put our trust in Him daily, or we can choose to exclude Him in our walk. Sometimes we forget to do that.

“As for me and my house…”

As for me and my house (Joshua 24:15), I choose the Lord and His ways. His faithfulness is new every morning (Lamentations 3), and thus I can know and stand on His Word, that He will see this all through to the victorious end.

“Surely my soul remembers and is bowed down within me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail.

They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.”

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.” Lamentations 3:20-25, NASU

Know that He is forever in control, that He knows the beginning to the end, and that His heart is continually for those who trust in Him. Therefore, we can always give thanks with a grateful heart.
