This month shall mark for you the beginning of the months; it shall be the first of the months of the year for you Exodus 12:2 (The Israel Bible™) הַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לָכֶם רֹאשׁ חֳדָשִׁים רִאשׁוֹן הוּא לָכֶם לְחָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָה Hear the verse in Hebrew ha-KHO-desh ha-ZEH la-KHEM ROSH kho-da-SHEEM ri-SHON HU la-KHEM l’-khod-SHAY ha-sha-NAH Monday was Rosh Chodesh Shvat, the first day of the Hebrew month of Shvat. Rosh Chodesh, literally ‘head of the month’ is celebrated when the first sliver of the new moon appears. Special prayers are added to the daily service; and it is customary to wish each other “chodesh tov,” a good month. The word chosesh is closely related to the word chadash ‘new’. The moon’s monthly cycle is a powerful reminder of the potential for renewal and rebirth within each of us.
