IF YOU OBEY GOD (Deuteronomy 28: 1- 14)
Obedience is a vital issue in walking with and working for God. To obey God is to follow instructions of God or behave in accordance with a law, rule, or order of God. It is to do exactly as God says. Everything boils down to obedience. Obedience is a condition for fruitful and prosperous Christian journey Adam disobeyed God and the consequence passed down to all mankind.
A. GOD COMMANDS OBEDIENCE
“If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow His commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.” (Deuteronomy 28:1)
It is a conditional word. The covenantal blessing of God for His people is promised on the condition of obedience. God commands us to fully obey Him, not turning aside from any of the commands. God expects total not selective, obedience from all mankind.
The sin of Amorites (Genesis 15:16) may have been part of why God dislodged them. Israel, privileged to occupy their place, should therefore have remembered that the only way to remain in the promised land was to remain faithful to the covenant-keeping God.
God gave them the possession of the Land as He promised. (Joshua 21:43-45) Obedience would be the best way to reciprocate His kind gesture and their continued possession of the Land largely depended on this.
Obedience is a divine command. For this reason, you can not afford not to follow it.
Attached to every commandment of God are blessings. What is the need of praying to God when one has not truly demonstrated total obedience to God’s commands? The condition is clear: Carefully and fully follow My commandment and I will set you above all the nations of the earth.
B. GOODLY BLESSINGS ON THE OBEDIENCE (Deuteronomy 28:2-14)
All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. Obedience attracts God’s blessings immediately ultimately. Abraham’s obedient faith brought him immeasurable blessings – blessings on the goings in and out of the obedient Divine security. Abundant all-round prosperity of these same blessings is promised to all the people of God on their continued obedience to God’s commands.
It is automatic: the obedient is blessed and becomes a blessing. Obey God’s commandments and remain blessed.
May our good God of Israel give us the power to obey Him so as to be blessed.
