What Would You Do?

And Reuven went on, “Shed no blood! Cast him into that pit out in the wilderness, but do not touch him yourselves”—intending to save him from them and restore him to his father
Genesis 37:22 (The Israel Bible™)

In this week’s Bible portion, we read about Reuben’s suggestion to throw Joseph into a pit filled with dangerous snakes and scorpions. Judah, on the other hand, recommended selling Joseph to foreign merchants travelling to Egypt. While the second option seemed safer and more likely to save Joseph’s life, there is reason to believe that it may have actually been better to thrown Joseph into the pit.

Despite the imminent dangers that lay in the pit, Joseph would have benefited physically and spiritually from remaining in the protection of the Land of Israel. There is no greater protection than the divine protection afforded to those residing in God’s land.
