At sundown Tuesday, Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement – began. It is a solemn day of introspection – where there is a ban on eating, drinking and the wearing of leather shoes among others. But it is also known as the Sabbath of Sabbaths – and is a festival day. Why festive? Perhaps, because it’s an appreciation of the opportunity that we have been given – to live as free human beings under the umbrella of God.
