Everyday the same fiery ball rises in the sky. The character of the moon however, is very different. The moon’s appearance constantly changes throughout the month. At some points, the moon is full, round and luminous. At other points, it appears as a tiny, fading, silver crescent. Even when the moon seems to have completely disappeared from the sky, it is not long before it reappears in all of its glory. It is very fitting that the Jewish calendar, holidays and festivals are based on the lunar calendar. The moon symbolizes the Jewish people; even in times of trial, tribulation and darkness, the Jewish people maintain their faith in Hashem and are ultimately always restored to their original glory.
