Genesis 23 records the purchase of the Chevron (Hebron) by Abraham as a burial plot for his wife, Sara. The Sages taught that the name Chveron (khev-ron) is a contraction of the the word ‘khaver’ /חבר (friend) and the word ‘na-eh’/נאה (agreeable). The name of the city of Hebron identifies Abraham as the first agreeable friend of God, as God says in Isaiah (41:8), “The seed of Abraham, My friend.” This past week UNESCO voted to list Chevron as a Palestinian world heritage site at risk, which US ambassador Haley called “an affront to history.” You can learn all about the unique connection between God and His people to the Hebron and to the other holy cities in Israel in Yishai Fleisher’s great course Israel’s Seven Holy Cities. This course available exclusively at the Yeshiva for the Nations, Israel365’s online academy for authentic Torah learning.
Rabbi Yishai Fleisher is the international spokesperson for the Jewish Community of Hebron and a broadcaster on the landofisrael.com. His fascinating series on Israel’s holy cities is available at Israel365’s Yeshiva for the Nations.
In a secret ballot held at the World Heritage Committee’s 41st annual summit in Krakow Poland, on Friday, UNESCO voted twelve to three in favor declaring the Holy City of Hebron and the Tomb of the Patriarchs Palestinian world heritage sites.
