Today’s Israel Inspiration

The prophetess Devorah instructs Barak in God’s name that he is to “draw to Mount Tavor” and take ten thousand soldiers to fight the evil Sisera. “Drawing soldiers” does not mean simply drafting them. Rather, Devorah was instructing Barack to “draw at their hearts” so that they would overcome their fears and fight courageously. Rabbi Shlomo Aviner notes how important it is to pay attention to the emotional state and needs of our soldiers even today. He writes that “The secret weapon of the Israeli Defense Forces is their morale, strength and courage.” With constant threats from all of Israel’s borders, the IDF is never at rest while protecting the citizens of Israel.
