The Priestly Blessing and the Prayer Shawl

Tens of thousands of people flock to the Western Wall to hear “Birkat Hakohanim”, the Priestly Blessing, performed by members of Judaism’s priestly class during the holidays of Passover and Sukkot. It is tradition that the hands of the Kohanim be covered by their prayer shawls known as “tallits” while they are blessing the Jewish People. The reason the priests’ hands are covered is because at the moment that the blessings are being recited, the presence of God is flowing directly through the Kohanim’ hands to the people.
